Do you ever wonder how to choose the correct beauty products for your body and skin type? Ayurvedic medicine suggests to choose your ingredients based on your dosha. Ayurvedic medicine is considered to be an alternative medicine in the US, but a traditional medicine in it's originating country of India. Ayurveda focuses on a mind-body connection and a personalized body type approach to healing the body. Dosha is your unique mind-body type. To find out which dosha you are take this test. Once you find your Dosha you can find which product ingredients will help your body thrive!
The three Dosha types are, Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata skin needs to be nourished and hydrated. It is at risk for premature aging due to a deficiency of well-nourished tissues in the body. Vata skin tends to be dry, cracked, and thin. Because of its thinness, Vata skin types have easily seen blood vessels. Lips and fingernails tend to be somewhat pale due to poor circulation. What does this mean for your beauty routine? Since your skin and hair tend to be on the dry side, heavy oils like almond and sesame work well to moisturize the skin daily or as a deep conditioning treatment. Being on the chilly side most of the time, a warm bath in the evening with scents of vanilla or lavender will help to keep you calm and soothed. When choosing makeup tones, try warm colors, such as earth colors, pastels, browns, and warm yellows. Some of my favorite Vata products are:
Hurraw Vata Lip Balm, $4.29. www.hurrawbalm.com. Hurraw Lip Balm all natural, vegan, made from premium raw, organic and fair trade ingredients..
Pratima Skincare Vata Herbal Cleanser, $20.00. www.Pratimaskincare.com. A nourishing cleanser, gently exfoliates and restores moisture for soft, smooth and hydrated skin with Comfrey, Haritaki & revitalizing Lemon.
Pitta skin types need to stay cool. Their skin tends to burn easily and they are more sensitive to sun exposure. A Pitta imbalance can result in rashes, acne, and other inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis. Since Pitta is more cooling, I would suggest using lights oils to moisturize or cleanse the skin, like Olive or Coconut. Cooler colors are also on your side! Blues, greens and silvers will help to bring your body into balance. A couple great products for Pittas, are:
Dr. Bronner's Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, $10.99. www.drbronners.com. I absolutely love this oil to clean and moisturize my face! You can cook with it too:)
Hurraw Pitta Lip Balm, $4.29. www.hurrawlipbalm.com. Contains coconut, mint and lemongrass to help cool down the fiery Pitta!
Kapha individuals tend to have naturally beautiful skin that ages slowly. Their skin tends to be plump and full of moisture. However, out of balance, Kapha skin tends to accumulate more toxins that predispose them to large pores, skin growths, skin eruptions, and a grayish film. The main focus for Kapha skin types should be removing toxins. Keeping moving and stimulated with bright colors, such as yellow, orange and red. Warm and stimulating scents like cloves, cinnamon or eucalyptus are great to include in any beauty products! Here are a couple products for the Kapha types:
Hurraw Kapha Lip Balm, $4.29. www.hurrawlipbalm.com. Contains grapefruit, ginger and eucalyptus to help stimulate your senses.
Origins Ginger Essence Roll, $18.50. www.Origins.com. Spicy and warm to help keep any Kapha interested!
