With the cold and flu season quickly approaching us, it's time to start taking a double dose of our vitamins. He told WWD, "I don't like B.S. and a lot of promises, and there are a lot of products out there you don't even need. My brain works in the same way whatever I do. The approach is practical, architectural and I use the same vocabulary whether I'm designing clothing or cosmetics."

He says his starting point for the collection was facial structure and the importance of creating the illusion of symmetry. He said, "You need to understand the face and compensate for the architecture of the face. A nice thick brow is the key to a youthful look." A man after my own heart!

YSL Is All Grown Up!

With the age of 30 quickly approaching, I have found myself growing out of lip gloss in the last year or two. I really don't want my lips to be sparkly or obnoxiously shiny at this point in my life. At a recent visit to the MAC counter, a makeup artist and I were talking about lip gloss and I told him that I felt I had grown out of my lipglass. He pulled out MAC Cremesheen, which I had tried before and really like how the texture was smooth and creamy without being tacky or sticky. I also liked the fact that there were no sparkles! He called Cremesheen "Big Girl Gloss" and I was sold!

Shiseido Makeup Artist and Creative Director, Dick Page, paired a natural eye look with Orange lips on the Runway for Spring 2011. Ironically, backstage for Spring many Makeup Artists followed the same trend without knowing that Orange was the color of choice amongst fellow MUA's. Each Makeup Artist is backstage in their own chaos filled environment and has no idea what other makeup trends are being featured by others.

Orange is not an easy for every woman to wear, so here are my top shades to try as well as some tips on how to rock Orange in a flattering way this Spring:

Because Orange shades are not always the most flattering on every skin tone, here are my tips on how to own it!

- Choose a sheer pigment in your lipstick or lipgloss versus an opaque or highly pigmented product. This will look more natural and less obvious.

- Lipgloss tends to be more sheer than Lipstick so it is an easy to wear product!

- Avoid frost and shimmer textures in your lip products which will only draw more attention to an already dramatic color.

- Use a Nude Lip Pencil with your Orange lipstick or gloss. I love MAC Sublime Culture Lip Pencil for light to medium skin tones, MAC Spice or Lure Lip Pencil for medium to medium dark skin tones and MAC Cork or Lure for dark skin tones.

Gucci Spring 2011

Despite the cold and snowy weather, in the fashion world Spring has sprung! Gucci has just revealed their sophisticated and colorful Spring/ Summer 2011 collection. This year look forward to hues in Rich Orange, Shocking Turquoise, Hunter Green, Vivid Purple,Gold and of course the neutrals that Gucci is well known to use in their collections. I was hoping to see more White Handbags, but this year think large structured Camel, Brown and Neutral Colored Handbags.

Makeup has taken a more natural turn with a pop of color on the lips. Bronzed skin was few and far between this year on the runway, look for natural fair skin that is perfectly polished. The difussed and natural eye shadow look continues.. yeah! Eyeliner is a light and minimal Brown with a soft line versus a defined line. Lips are colored with a Red Hue containing an Orange tint versus a traditonal Cherry Red.

Recreate this look:

-Skin:

Skip the bronzer and use a sheer foundation, such as Laura Mercier or Josie Maran Tinted Moisturizer set with a loose powder. Makeup Forever HD Loose Powder or Laura Mercier Secret Powder.

-Bronzer:

While this look is not very bronzed, it is great to give your skin more dimension. Try Nars Bronzer in Laguna. This shade is light and natural and will not look over done.

-Brows:

Softly define your brows to add volume using a light taupe eye shadow, such as MAC Omega Eye Shadow and a large angel brush to avoid too much definition.

-Eye Shadow:

Begin by prepping your eye lid with an eye shadow base, I love Urban Decay Primer Potion because it is neutral and does not contain a frost texture.

Line your lower eye lash line using a small fluff brush. This creates natural depth around the eye and helps your eyes to appear larger.

Skip the heavy brow highlight and move straight to defining the crease area using MAC eye shadow in Kid and a large crease brush.

-Mascara:

Use a volumizing mascara to build your lashes naturally. I am loving Dior Blackout! Apply several generous coats of mascara, wait a couple of minutes for the mascara to dry and then curl your eye lashes using your favorite eye lash curler.

-Lips:

Try MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger. Skip the lip liner and apply your lipstick perfectly with a lip brush. This lipstick is somewhat matte, so the wear is wonderful!

Clean and Healthy Skin

You may think this post will mention facial cleansers and cleansing techniques, but I am going to work from within! Yes, I do mention having a clean diet every other post, but this is something that I strongly believe in.

Working for cosmetics companies for years and years I would come accross women daily that were looking for that miracle cream or product that would make the clock turn back it's time, but the truth is that most products don't make the biggest difference that you can make with your skin. While products are applied on the skin and the skin does absorb ingredients into the bloodstream, you cannot make a dramatic change to your skin with products. The best way to maintain clean and healthy skin is through a healthy diet consisting of whole foods while avoiding processed foods and eat organic when possible.

I was just having this conversation with my husband about organic produce (we have this conversation a lot!!) and how it is not more mainstream to not consume chemicals and pesticides. Why can't organic food be more affordable so everyone can afford it?! Anyway, I can go on and on, but eating food in it's most basic form is best for your body.

In fact, I just heard this quote, “As the eyes are the mirror to one’s soul, the skin is the mirror to one’s digestive tract.” Cleaning up your digestive tract tends to clean up quite a few skin problems as well. I love it!

When the skin is congested and problematic, then most likely your digestive tract is in the same condition. An example of a clean diet is filled with fruits, vegeatables and whole foods and grains. Avoid foods like, caffeine, alcohol, processed and refined foods. Like I have said many many times, shop on the outside of the grocery store and avoid the middle where the processed foods are sold. The recipes may not be for everyone, but she uses almond flour in many of her recipes which is low card and high protein and of course gluten free. Check it out for very simple and easy recipes! Battle Of The Argan Oils

Argan oil this, argan oil that... I seem to hear so much buzz about the amazing Argan oil. So what is the deal with argan oil and why is it so wonderful? Most importantly, what products are worth purchasing? I will break it down for you!

Argan oil has been said to have been the secret of women of Morocco for centuries and has been used for its nutritional and cosmetic benefits. The oil contains more than half the amount of vitamin e that olive oil does and is known for its anti-aging and healing properties. It is good enough to eat!

Argan oil can be used on the skin and hair as a moisturizer and revitalizer. With this said, how do you know which argan oil products really work? I have tried a handful of hair oils made of argan oil and I have to say that Moroccan Oil is by far the most amazing on the market! My hair will look smooth and silky and I will forget how I was able to maintain it and try another product on the market. In just a week or two my hair is missing the amazing Moroccan Oil and will look dry and brittle at the ends. The smooth texture never left my hair looking too oily and really seemed to work. I did not find the shampoo and conditioner as amazing, but maybe that is just me? Living in a dry climate in Colorado and having long hair that reaches past the middle of my back, I can't live without my Moroccan Oil!!

I am not one to bad mouth products, but I did not have great experience with 4 other Moroccan Oils/ Serums on the market. I really gave them a chance and used them on average of over a month. I still think Moroccan Oil is the best by a long shot!

My mascara, which I rave about constantly, is GOGO by Josie Maran and contains "Morocco's Liquid Gold" or argan oil. I love how gentle this mascara is to my eyes and never leaves them irritated or unatural looking. The best part is that the argan oil has been so moisturizing to my lashes that they look so much more lusturous and people are constantly asking me if I am wearing false lashes. I have only tried one lash growth product and will never do it again! My eyes have never been the same and seem to be irritated with most products after trying the growth serum. So thumbs up to argan oil in my mascara!!

I also found out just weeks ago that argan oil helps to regulate sebum production in the skin. This means less oily skin!! I thought this may too good to be true, so I have been using the Josie Maran Bronzing Serum and SPF 40 Natural Daily Sun Protection during the day. I didn't really notice anything dramatic for about 2 weeks, then without really noticing right away I realized that I did not have to touch up as early in my day and I didn't look like I had applied baby oil all over my face by 11am. I am sold!! Almost 6 weeks later I am still loving this combo and have been touching up less throughout the day.

I love a good hand cream, but I am actually a really simple girl and an all in one product means the world to me. I end up using the Josie Maran Argan Oil Solid many times during the day on my lips, cuticles, as an eye cream, for added shine or "dewyness" on my skin, knees, elbows, you name it!! It works so well and is really my new favorite eye cream. I like to rub the solid between my fingers to warm it and then apply it wherever needed.

I sound like I am affiliated with Josie Maran or receive some sort of compensation from them the way that I rant and rave about the line. I can assure you all that I have no affiliation what so ever and have never received any kind of compensation. I am simply telling you this out of love for the product. The same goes with Moroccan Oil!!

Japanese Cosmetic Line, Shu Uemera, is very well known for their Eye Lash Curler which is more versatile than most curlers. Shu's Eye Lash Curler has a wide base which makes it easy to curl almost any set of eyes. As a makeup artist I have run into many situations when my MAC Eye Lash Curler did not fit very well when trying to curl a client's lashes.

I have been using a Shu Uemera Eye Lash Curler for years now, both personally and professionally and cannot say enough wonderful things about. Yes... an eye lash curler really does make a huge difference, especially a good one. Another product from Shu that has come in handy many times is the Mini Eye Lash Curler, which I use on women with very small eyes or even Asian women.

Eye Lash Curling Tips:

1. Curl your eye lashes not just once, but pump your curler at least 2-3 times to ensure a long lasting curl.

2. You can curl your eye lashes before or mascara. I have heard many horror stories about women curling their eyelashes after applying mascara and somehow pulling out their eye lashes. I personally curl my lashes after my mascara is on and dry because my lashes have even more lift and my eyes look more open. I have never had any problems, but please be careful!!

3. Replace the silicone pad/ insert in the base of the eye lashe curler so your lashes have a nice and gentle curl. A damaged or missing silicone pad/ insert can leave your eye lashes with damage if you are not careful.

4. Clean your eye lash curler with rubbing alcohol to remove makeup and bacteria. I clean my curler in my kit with every use, but clean my own about once a week or so. I have noticed that since I do curl my eye lashes after applying mascara there is quite a bit of product left on my curler. Your eye lashes may stick to that product and can pull them out or cause other issues.

Don't Be A Dirty Birdy!

This is one of my all time favorite products! As much as I would love to wash my hair every single day, I can't. If I did wash daily my hair would be so dry and unhealthy! It is very important for your hair to be restored with naturals oils from your scalp, as much as that doesn't sound very clean. Like I said, I would love to wash my hair daily, especially after working out, but instead I use a dry shampoo.

Pssst! is the original dry shampoo that was created for people who could not wash their hair for one reason or another. This must have product has been around for decades now and is only gaining popularity by being named an Allure Magazine favorite.

How and when do I use it you ask? Use the dry shampoo when you need a little freshing up whether it be between shampoos or after being active. I wash my hair every other day and use this product on my day off of shampooing. Hold the nozzle 6" away from your scalp and spray directly into the scalp area then lightly massage the product into the hair. Unlike other dry shampoos this products works on all hair colors.

The powder like spray helps to absorb excess oil while leaving behind a fresh scent and a complete refreshed look for your hair. I use this product not only on myself but also on models when I have to create many styles in one day.

Aging With Grace

It is bound to happen, we are all going to age! We will all have that moment where we look into the mirror and notice our first fine line, or say "OMG, I look like my mother!" So why fight the natural process of aging? I say don't fight it, but age with grace and beauty. Be comfortable in your own skin and love how you are constantly evolving and changing. I know this is much easier said than done!

Since the fountain of youth has yet to be discovered, we are all on our own when it comes to slowing down the aging process. One way to know how and when you will age is to take a look at your own mom and notice if she has deep lines between her brows, fine lines around her eyes, etc. Granted your mom most likely lathered up with baby oil and baked in the sun for hours on in before you were even born! She will still be able to give you somewhat of an idea what you will look like as you age. With this in mind you can be a step ahead of the aging process.

So how can you be proactive you ask? Well, it is definitely not the $350 cream at your department store! Your genetics will determine how you age, so if you picked up that nervous habit of your mother's by furrowing her brow or squinting constantly then you tend to weaken the skin and cause an indentation.

Your ethnicity can also play a role in how you age. For example African Americans, Hispanic and Asian women tend to have thicker skin that contains more collagen. While these ethnicities tend to notice hyperpigmentation as their first sign of aging, Caucasian women tend to notice fine lines as a sign of aging.

Retinol has been proven to boost the collagen production in the skin which helps to prevent signs of aging. I personally am a huge fan of retinol and use it whenever possible. One of my most recent finds is NIA 24 Skin Strengthing Complex. This niacin containing cream was a great surprise for me. I purchase it on a whim for $85.00 and was left feeling pretty guilty. I thought hey I spend more in 5 minutes at Whole Foods, so I might as well give it a shot. First of all, I have to remind you that I have oily skin and that a cream is not my friend. I loved the scent, the smooth, moisturizing texture and the way that my skin looked in the morning. The cream was not too heavy within only 1 week I noticed that my skin was more smooth and less oily in the daytime. This cream is for building the barrier of the skin, improves discoloration and helps to diminish fine lines and wrinkles. At $85, this was a great buy and I have to admit that I am hooked and this is my new night cream.

Other great retinol products are Help Me by Philosophy which also helps with fine lines and wrinkles as well as discoloration. This product ranges from $18 - $45 and can be found at most department stores. Apply at night alone or under your moisturizer. As with any retinol containing product, make sure to protect your face with an SPF during the day.

I have talked about Gylcolic Acid for years on my blogs and YouTube Channel and I am still a firm believer! I still have a chemical peel done every 6-8 weeks which contains glycolic acid and helps to reduce what I call "texture" on the skin. "Texture" can be fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, anything that prevents your skin from being smooth. Glycolic Cleansers can be a great way to incorporate the ingredient into your routine.

Great products are one part of having great skin, but to me the most important part is what you put into your body. I preach this like crazy, but I truly believe that eating clean and exercising is they key to how you age and how you feel. Take Madonna for example, she is 50 years old and lives a life more healthy than most could ever imagine. Madonna's diet is free of processed foods, dairy, spices (Tracy Anderson, Madonna's trainer, says that spices bloat and upset the digestive tract which cause weight gain), oils, alcohol and caffeine. She eats a low card, whole grain, high protein and fresh food diet. This means eat all the fruits and veggies that you want, 1.5 to 3 liters of water a day, nuts, chicken or fish and whole grains. This is just an example of a healthy diet.

Healthy oils are also great to add into your diet which show in your skin. Fish oils are great, try Carlson's Fish Oils which are high quality and the best on the market. For the veggies out there, try my new favorite, Barlean's Strawberry and Banana Smoothie Flax Seed Oil. Avocados are a natural oil that work great too! Eat plenty of them or put them in your next home made facial mask, 1 Avocado peeled and mashed, 1 TBSP. Honey and Stir in 1 TBSP. of Plain Greek Yogurt. This is a very moisturizing mask that you can leave on for 20 minutes and rinse.

Preventative Aging Tips:

1. Always wear sunscreen! I prefer an SPF of 30 or more since I am fair. Look for sunscreen in your favorite products, like foundation, hand cream and lip gloss.

I love Jane Iredale Pressed Powder Foundation SPF 18 and Bath and Body Works Glove Me Tender Hand Cream SPF 15.

2. Eat plenty of foods rich in antioxidants, like blueberries, broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, red grapes, garlic, green tea, spinach and soy. Antioxidants help to prevent cancer, heart disease and can slow down the aging process. Antioxidants can combat free radicals by creating an inhospitable ground for them and can support cognitive functions.

3. Treat and Protect your hands as well as you neck. Women often forget these areas and that is why you can always tell a womans age by looking at her hands and neck.

4. Whiten your smile! Nothing can brighten your face and add a youthful appearance like a beautiful white smile. As a makeup artist constantly working so close to people, I notice that women tend to put their skin care and teeth on the back burner. Your face is the first thing that people will see when they meet you.

5. One makeup myth as we age is that we need more color. This has to be my biggest pet peave as a makeup artist... the dreaded dark or fuschia lip color on a daily basis. Check out the book, How To Not Look Old, by Charla Krupp. This book is great! Charla gives great examples of how to brighten your look. For instance, a sheer berry or pink lipstick is great versus a mauve or a concentrated berry color. I love MAC Sophisto over lip conditioner!

This was a lot of info!! So now you are prepared to be proactive in the aging process.
Remember that women of every age can be beautiful and that aging is only natural. Just age with grace.

Teeth Whitening

A great smile is your best accessory... I love that saying! It is so true that a nice white smile can really brighten your face and polish your look. If you are like me and strive for a white smile, then you may have spent so much time and money on whitening products, dentist visits, etc.

I have found a one step product that is very affordable, quick, easy and very effective that will whiten your smile in no time! I have been using this product for months and I have to tell you that I love it! It is called Plus White, which is a 5 minute speed whitening gel.

Previous to using Plus White I found that my teeth never whitened evenly and I had a lot of sensitivity afterwards. When I had heard of this product from another makeup artist on YouTube, I thought.. hmm only $5 for this bleach and you can buy it at Walmart? How good can it be? It is amazing actually! I have recommended it to all of my friends and family who love it also.

To use Plus White you will need to use your bleaching trays and if you do not have a pair that has been made for you then you can always purchase the Plus White Whitening Kit (watch the video below to see the box or use a sports mouth guard). If you do use the plus white trays then you will need to shape the trays to your mouth (place the trays in boiling water and press firmly into your teeth to shape). Do not rinse or place your trays into warm or hot water after they have been shaped because they will loose the shape of your mouth.

Use a q-tip or your finger to apply the bleach between the teeth to begin. Next squeeze a small amount of the gel into your trays and place in your mouth. Plus White suggests that when you begin that you should use bleach your teeth every day for 5 minutes for up to 2 weeks. I now use the gel with my trays once a weeks or so for about 10- 15 minutes. It is really simple and works great!

New Gucci Fragrance...Gucci Guilty!

I have yet to try a Gucci fragrance that I do not love. Just by the name of Gucci's latest scent, Gucci Gulity, I know that this may be my new favorite. The fragrance was designed for the glamorous, daring, brave and very sexy women who like to party and enjoy themselves. So how doesn't want to fit in that category?

I am such a sucker for the story behind a fragrance and the inspiration to create the scent. Guilty has to top the charts! Gucci Guilty contains notes of mandarin, pink pepper, peach, lilac, geranium, amber and patchouli. The spicy pink pepper note along with the citrus mandarin has to be an amazing combination!

The beautiful and newly bronzed Evan Rachel Wood is the spokesmodel for the new fragrance. In case you are not familiar with Ms. Wood, she is dating the controversial singer Marilyn Manson. She is known most for her acting and singing career.

Skin and Makeup tips for active women

My new hobby for the past 4 months has been fitness, fitness and more fitness! I am proud to say that I am now running 4 miles a day and looking more tone and lean from weight trainging. I am loving it! One thing that I did not love in the beginning was slightly burned and blemished skin. Being outside more was ruining my skin, and fast!

I turned to a variety of waterproof sunscreens and even started to wear hats. This only made my skin more irritated! Needless to say I went back to my good 'ol favorite, Pratima Neem Rose Sunscreen SPF30. I thought this sunscreen may be too gentle to wear while working out because it may wear off more quick, but I was proved wrong! This sunscreen lasts and most importantly did not clog my pores while perspiring. That seemed to be the biggest problem with the other sunscreens.

If you have never tried Pratima skincare, they are an Ayurvedic skincare line that is cruelty, paraben and chemical free. I am in love with this gentle yet amazing line!

The other obvious tip that I have while working out is to not wear makeup... foundation specifically. Some women do not have a problem with skin irritations while being active, but most women do experience mild reactions such as break outs, clogged pores, sebum deposits, etc.

I also found it very helpful to use a salicylic based gel cleanser before my workout. This cleanser helped to rid of any excess bacteria from the beginning. I love Image Clear Cell Cleanser. I have been using it with my Clarisonic Facial Brush for over 6 months now and haven't experienced notthing but amazing results. I use my brush after my work out with my cleanser rather than before. Before I cleanse manually. I feel that using the brush after my work out removes my sunscreen and the perspiration. This is a great cleanser for a normal to oily skin or for anyone who is acne-prone.

One last tip to to never "wipe" your skin or rub your skin while working out. Sweat contains bacteria, which you do not want to rub into your skin to clog a pore or cause a break out. Use a clean towel or tissue and dab the skin instead.

I feel like my skin has improved, especially the tone since working out. I have also noticed that since I have been really active that my dark circles are less prominent. That is a huge plus!!

Back in action!

I have been m.i.a. for a little while, but I am officially back in action! I have had a busy couple of months filled with bridal makeup, lessons and have been focusing more print and a couple of tv jobs. I have to admit that I am loving the full day gigs and being able to work with a crew more than once, so I am excited to move forward and focus more on tv, film and print.

I have also had the chance to work more with my favorite new photographers, Brett Seeley and Don Hales. Check out their work. They are so talented and happen to be great guys too!

I have also just finished filming and recording audio for a series of makeup instructional dvds that should be released by the end of the year. I had so much fun filming and creating the content for these videos! Stay tuned for more updates. Below are the covers for the dvds.

Change your polish as often as your shadow!

Nail polish can be such a pain sometimes! I always manage to chip my fresh manicure before the day is over. To top it off I recently went on vacation and was thinking about what I was going to do about nail polish remover and all of my nail paraphernalia in my already over stuffed cosmetic bag. I then ran into Sula Nail Color while shopping at Ulta the night before my trip. The bottle gave the too good to be true directions, that I would not need a nail polish remover and to just peel the formula off. I had to give it a shot!

I went home, cleaned my nails and applied the permanent base coat, then two coats of the color and then the permanent top coat. I was impressed with the opaque color of the polish and the wear that ended up lasting 3 days without a chip. That is a record for me! I then began to peel the polish at the first sign of wear, which was really easy and I had to admit that I was really happy to not use a toxic polish remover. I forgot to mention that Sula is phthalates, toulene and formaldehyde free. Those are all chemicals which are linked to cancer and are hormone inhibitors. I don't use polish that contain any of those ingredients!

So, the polish was really easy to take off! I ended up applying the color, which was Blush, and skipped the permanent base and top coat. Not only did the color turn a couple of shades darker, but it chipped within hours. If you are going to buy Sula, definitely splurge on the permanent top and bottom coat. Sula states that their peel and paint nail color is like your makeup, you can change your color as often as your lipstick or eye shadow. It also lasts just as long as your makeup if you don't use the top and bottom coat.

This was a great buy and could not have been more easy for travel. For the health conscious women out there, this is a great alternative to traditional nail lacquers on the market.

Chemical Peels

I always tell my friends and my clients to "invest in their skin". Skin is so important and the reflection of our over all health. It is the first thing that people notice about you! With this said, I struggled with my skin for many years and after "living clean", detoxing (many times!!) and really figuring out my body and crazy food allergies I noticed a huge difference in my skin, but still needed that extra boost for a more flawless complexion.

I stumbled upon a skin care clinic in Colorado after walking in a shopping district and decided to walk into the clinic to schedule a facial or something that will improve the appearance of my skin. After a detailed consultation, I was in the facial room ready for microdermabrasion and a glycolic acid chemical peel. I had had microderm done before and did not notice much of a difference, but my aestitician assured me that I should have both procedures done which compliment each other. To make a long story short, after each appointment I noticed a huge difference, but it wasn't until after my 4th appointment that I loved my skin!

5 years later, I am still a huge fan of chemical peels and haven't found an over the counter product or any other treatment that can even come close to improving my skin the same way. A chemical peel is an acid based solution used to remove layers of damaged skin. I wanted a chemical peel because I wanted my skin tone to look more even and to minimize the appearance of my pores and any scarring. The peel definitely works! This is a step or two above any product that you can buy over the counter.

A lot of women are always on the hunt for the perfect skin care and "the miracle cream", but realistically most products over the counter are not going to be life changing and give you the results that you desire. I see many women spending an obscene amount of money on skin care and cosmetics to mask their skin care concerns, but why not get to the root of the problem? A chemial peel can range in price depending on your location and formula, but you can plan on spending around $100 for each peel. For some women, this may not be the answer! Like I stated earlier, my skin was a big problem until I became aware of my gluten allergy and began a gluten free lifestyle. I also support the healthy bacteria in my body which acidolphillus and probiotics, avoid sugar and refined foods while eating a lot of raw and fresh foods. Caffeine is also great to avoid, which I have a hard time with! Everyone's body is different, so you have to find what works for your body and again get to the root of the problem.

In conjuction with treatments like a chemical peel, I love my clarisonic facial brush and am a huge fan of cleansers with glycolic and salicylic acid in them. I also avoid tanning my face and drink plenty of water.

So again, "invest in your skincare" and visit your local skin care clinic to see how you can improve your skin. This is one my secrets to great skin!

I'm in Miami!

So I just came back from a well deserved vacation in Miami with my little guy and hubby. We had a blast! The weather was amazing, the food so diverse and fresh and so many cultures blended together to create my new favorite place. I haven't been to a warm and humid climate in years now, so I forgot about the ways in which I had to change my beauty routines. I found myself many times looking like a racoon because of my mascara melting off of my eyes and my skin resembled an oil slick! Needlees to say, I hit Sephora the next morning after arriving in Miami to find some great new products to make myself look a little more normal in the humid weather.

While at Sephora I pick up this amazing powder by Laura Mercier, Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder and Shine Control. I am known for having oily skin to begin with, but put humidity into the mix and I am a mess! This powder was an absolute savior! The powder not only has a green tint to cancel out any redness, but it doesn't look dry or "cakey" when applied throughout the day. You can either use the sponge side applicator for a full coverage or the other side which is white and more soft for a sheer to medium coverage (this is the applicator side that I prefer). Anyway, this is a great buy and works extremely well, even back in Colorado! You can find the Laura Mercier powder at Sephora.com for around $32.00.

Next on my shopping list were from Josie Maran, who quotes "I believe in balance. I believe that doing the right thing can be glamorous. I believe in beauty without the baggage." When I read this quote on her mauve colored packaging, I instantly fell in love! I then noticed that her products use a variety of organic ingredients, are non-toxic, cruelty free and more. That sealed the deal right there. I ended up buying her mascara in black and her argan oil stick.

For months now I have been having a lot of irritation with my eyes and I can't figure out what has been bothering them. I purchased all new makeup, tried many brands, switched contacts and solution... everything! I noticed a difference when using all preservative free contact solution and eye drops, so I thought that maybe I should try a more healthy makeup line as well. I tried Josie's mascara the next day and noticed towards the middle of the day that my eyes were not blood shot and that they were not itchy or irritated like usual. Not only did the mascara help my eye sensitivities, but it looked very natural and separated like I love my lashes to look. I have to admit that I build this mascara like crazy! I love it.

The Argan Oil Stick is multi-purpose and works really well as a lip conditioner and an added "dew" around the eyes. In Miami, I noticed that women looked more and natural and didn't wear too much makeup. I noticed a lot of beautiful skin, brows and lashes. I loved the natural beauty there! The Argan Oil gave my skin a natural moisture just where I needed it and I also used it on my cuticles throughout the day as well. This is a great product to have in your cosmetic bag on the go!

The other amazing experience that I encountered in Miami was "The Brazilian Blowout"! One of my clients had told me about it just weeks before and told me that her hair stylist was the only one certified to do it in Denver. In Miami the Brazilian Blowout was huge! So basicalIy a Brazilian Blowout is a keratin treatment that leaves your hair looking more shiny, volumized and smooth.I ended up making an appointment in hopes of having my suddenly turned frizzy hair due to the humidity look silky and feel soft again. An hour and a half later, my hair looked better than it ever has! The great part is that the results are supposed to last 10 - 12 weeks. This is a simple treatment done most salons by a certified stylist and can benefit anyone with any hair type. The cost begins around $120 and goes up depending on your hair.

So over all I had an amazing vacation and love all of my new products! I also can't say enough about all of the natural beauties in Miami and how simple and clean they look. I always say less is more!

Spring and Summer 2010 Makeup and Fashion Trends

I absolutely love the trends for makeup and fashion for Spring and Summer this year! I have been so inspired that I wanted to make a really quick video containing just pictures and a brief description.

I think I am mostly excited because it is even easier to be more fashionable this year. Everywhere I go I see such cute clothes and if you look you can find them at a great price! Being fashionable has never been so attainable!

I personally love the boyfriend tees with a pair of leggings and gladiator heels! House of Harlow has stolen my heart this season. If you haven’t heard of House of Harlow yet, it is Nicole Richie’s new jewelry line. The line is inspired by the mid to late 1960’s and definitely makes a statement. It brings me back to being 18 and working at a vintage store! I have bought a couple of pieces of Nicole’s newest jewelry line at http://www.revolveclothing.com/.

An oldie but a goodie is Forever 21, http://www.forever21.com/. I feel a little awkward going in there being almost 30 now, but hey it works once in a great while, right? I have spotted some great boyfriends tees here as well as leggings. Both are under $10 and are available in a variety of colors.

Now onto makeup! I have been more than excited over the makeup trends that are coming about! If you have followed my blog or youtube channel, then you know that I am not a huge fan of a lot of frosted eye shadow or excessively bright colors for everyday. I think working for MAC for a while can do that to you! You will see that the focus is on skin this season. Spend your money on your skin care and your treatments. A good foundation that works with your skin type and lifestyle are also key (Stay tuned for a foundation tutorial next!!). If you have noticed that celebrities are even toning down there makeup and contouring their skin and creating a strong brow and great lashes rather than piling on the eye makeup.

MAC has a great new line, Give Me Liberty Of London, which I love the Vestral White Nail Lacquer and the Shell Pearl Beauty Powder. The Beauty Powder can be used all over the skin or on the cheek bones to highlight and give a soft yet luminous effect. I am completely in love with MAC’s new Cremesheen Glass. Dolce and Gabbana SS 2010

The Spring/ Summer 2010 collection for Dolce and Gabbana has a classic inspiration of a glamorous red lip and a natural matte contoured eye shadow look. I have a great appreciation for beautiful makeup that is not over done and that can be worn by women everywhere. I call these looks, “wearable”! Many times a runway look can be avant garde and a little too much for most, but this look is very easy to accomplish and timeless in my eyes.

As I talk about in the video tutorial below on how to achieve this gorgeous look, matte texture eye shadows are once again hitting the mainstream and I could not be happier! Frost has been very trendy for years now and can be abused easily by being placed all over the entire eyelid, crease and brow highlight area. Please pick one or two areas of the eye to sport your frosted eye shadow… not all over!

Beauty In A Bottle… Well, Not Quite!

Ever wish there was a magic drink that can give you energy, promote healthy hair, nails and skin? Plus balance your metabolism and detoxify your body? Well there is. Kombucha is an elixir or tea which has been aged to help normalize the body’s acidity or ph, detoxify the liver, blood and digestion system. What does this all mean? It means that Kombucha will make you feel good! Hey… when you feel good you look good, right?

Women spend so much on cosmetics and products for their outward appearance, but why not work from the inside out? After all, our skin is a reflection of our over all health. Nars Matte Velvet Pencil

I have to admit that I am one of those women who have a horrible time keeping lipstick or lip gloss on my lips. Before I know it I am being Chatty Cathy with a client and convincing them that they need to wear a natural color lip pencil which will do wonders for them! I can see my client looking at my lips and then I remember, “Oh yeah I haven’t touched up since two clients ago!” It is great that I love my job so much that I become so absorbed in it, but it is horrible that I have to touch up my lips so often!

I have tried the ultra- dry and crusty long wear lipsticks which were less than exciting, along with every trick and product in the book. I still end up having to touch up about every 2 hours or less. Well, I guess this is a part of life! I can tell you that I have recently tried Nars Matte Velvet Lip Pencil, which I had amazing luck with. I am a huge Nars fan and add a piece or two to my kit when I can anyway. The Matte Pencil is very pigmented with a matte texture that lasts longer than most lip pencils. The great part is that I don’t need a lipstick to pair with it if I don’t want to. This is an all in one color… your lipstick and liner! I like to use a tiny dab of gloss in the center of my lip. Just enough to add shine but not enough to prematurely wear off my lip color by running all over.

Cruella, a true red shade, is a great choice for the holidays! This lip pencil retails for $24.00 and can be found at Sephora.com. As with any lip color try using a lip primer on and around the lips to keep your color on longer and to help prevent from the dreaded bleeding. I have really liked the performance of Trish McEvoy, MAC and Guerlain Lip Primers.

Olive oil in your beauty routine?

Olive oil is typically found in your kitchen pantry, but now in your medicine cabinet? The high quality oil is great for more than sauteing your favorite veggies! Try using olive oil as an eye makeup remover. Not only is this method more affordable, but it is much better for your delicate eye area skin and more effective.

Many cosmetic brands use a synthetic oil in their eye makeup removers, but if you have ever tried brands such as Lancome or Chanel then you know that their removers are not all that they are cracked up to be. Not to mention the fact that they are not worth the almost $3o price tag! Oil is known for literally melting off your eye makeup and this is why the ingredient has been ever so popular when used in mainstream beauty makeup removers.

After being irritated for years from fragrance and synthetic eye makeup removers, I tried Jojoba Oil and had great results! Jojoba Oil is found in many beauty products and is a great natural moisturizer for the skin, hair and nails, as is olive oil. Jojoba Oil is also a great alternative to Olive Oil if you can’t stomach the aroma.

If you have trouble with your eye makeup lasting throughout the day and end up looking like a raccoon, then opt for waterproof eye makeup products. In the past many women would avoid using waterproof products because of the difficulty removing them. Now that you can remove your eye makeup quickly and for less money… give that waterproof eye liner!

Smoky Eye 101

For about a decade now the term “smoky eye” has been ever so popular when describing a desired eye makeup look. As a Makeup Artist for these past 10 years, when I ask a client “Describe how you would like to see your makeup”, 99.9% of the time the client replies “I would like a smoky eye!” I may exaggerate a little!

So what exactly is a smoky eye? I am going to break it down as plain and simple as I can! I have also created an easy to follow video tutorial for those of you who are visual.

smok·y (sm < ![endif]-->k < ![endif]-->) adj. smok·i·er, smok·i·est: Resembling smoke; hazy; dirty; made dark; thick; murky.

So with this said, a smoky eye is eye makeup that resembles smoke. As you know smoke is not a perfect line or one even tone. Smoke is usually dark, smudgy and as a makeup look portrays a sultry and sexy look.

So how does a smoky eye appear? Below there are a couple examples of a smoky eye:

As you can see from the pictures, the smoky eye does not always look the same. There are many looks to a smoky eye which are done with many techniques, colors and products. A smoky eye can be worn by anyone of any age for any occasion. From day to night time, natural to dramatic, the smoky eye has many versions! You can smoke the entire eye, the top lid only or just the bottom… anything goes!

Here is a step by step of a very basic smoky eye look:

1. Prep your eye area. Try using an eye shadow base that is water resistant or crease resistant. This will help to smooth on your eye makeup easier, more evenly and you will see a truer eye shadow texture and color. Also, it is very important for a dramatic eye or for someone who has oily eyelids. Your eye makeup will last longer and look better! I really love Urban Decay Primer Potion or MAC Paints.

2. Use the Stila Eye Kajal (My all time favorite!) to line your eye. This eye kajal is very creamy and pigmented, so use a light hand. Now don’t worry about your line not being perfect, because when using a pencil it rarely is! You can line the top lid, the bottom or both. This depends on your eye shape and your preference.

3. Now use a smudger or a pencil brush to gently smoke out your eye liner. Remember to use the tip of the brush and have a light hand. You want to keep the darkest point around the lash line and blend or “smoke” out the outer edge of the liner. You want a gradual fade from darkest to lightest. The darkest at your lash line and the lightest the furthest from your lash line.

4. You can set your eye liner with a little eye shadow to “set it” for a longer wearing look.

5. Finish your smoky look by placing your eye kajal in your water cil (inner rim of the eye) and your favorite mascara. You know have a sexy smoky eye!

Zoya Nail Polish: A Healthier Non-Toxic Choice!

For years I have heard about how nail polish containing phthalates, formaldehyde, toluene and camphor. These ingredients are all chemicals that can disrupt your nervous system, hormones and more. Now that may sound a little dramatic, but I am one to believe that chemicals are harmful to our bodies. We are just women trying to look more beautiful and adding some enjoyment in our lives, so why do beauty products contain these horrible ingredients? The sad truth is that many cosmetics on the market do! Nail polish being one of the worst offenders, I was more than ecstatic to find ZOYA which is free of phthalates, formaldehyde, toluene and camphor. This brand offers a great alternative to mainstream nail polish with just as many if not more of a color selection. ZOYA even has this season’s very popular matte texture nail polish, so needless to say they are not lacking in the trend department! Nail Polish Remover, as you can probably guess from the very potent aroma, is not the best as far as harmful chemicals go either. In Denver there is a wonderful salon called Ananda’s in Cherry Creek North that offers an Organic Pedicure using Zoya and their home made sugar scrub. My favorite skincare products and secrets

Having great skin is very important to me, so I am always on the hunt for great skin care products. I made a video talking about some of my favorite products that I have come across. For years now I have been very health conscious and prefer to use more natural products that are not tested on animals and do not contain parabens or chemicals.
One of the most important aspects to having great skin is to take care of your body from the inside out. Here are a couple of pointers:
1. Drink plenty of filtered water daily.

2. Eat Clean. Avoid processed or refined foods, caffeine and sugar. Eat vegetables, fruits and foods in their raw state that have little to no processing.
3. Supplements. Fish oils are an amazing supplement for the body that acts as an anti-inflammatory. Your hair, skin and nails will thank you! Your skin will look more supple and radiant with fish oil and your complexion can even appear more even because of the anti-inflammatory properties. Try Carlson’s Fish Oils which are very pure and contain less mercury than any brand on the market. Since I am vegetarian I love flax seed oil, Barlean's Banana Strawberry Omega Swirl.

These products work great for me and my combination skin, but they may not work for you and your skin type so please make sure to consult a skin care professional with any major concerns.

Love the Lash Blast!

I have never been a fan of Cover Girl until recently when I tried their Lash Blast. There has been so much hype over this mascara and I had to try it for myself! I have been an avid believer in Chanel’s Inimitable for years now, but realistically who wants to spend almost $30 a month on a mascara? Not me!

The wand in Lash Blast has tiny little rubber bristles that will separate each lash and this help your lashes look more lush. The more space between each bristle of the mascara brush, the more mascara that you will have on your lashes. That means that you lashes are more likely to look more clumpy!

This is the mascara that I personally use, but as a makeup artist it is difficult to get the amazing effect that the rubber brush gives the lashes due to the fact that I use a new disposable wand on each client.

Denver Makeup Artist bringing sanitary to a new level!

I am proud to be exclusively using Beauty So Clean, which cleans, rejuvenates and removes bacteria from all makeup, cases and tools. I thought that my makeup kit was clean before!

Beautiful Pakistani Wedding

Bride Manjari and Groom Sameer celebrated their wedding on May 24th, 2009 at the Westminster Weston in Westminster, Colorado. Manjari and Sameer had a traditional Hindu ceremony, but Manjari did not want traditional Indian Bridal Makeup for her special day. Manjari wanted a more neutral look with a hint of drama for her ceremony and then for her reception, we added an a little color to her eye makeup. I used MAC Creme De Violet Eye Shadow in her crease which gave an Indian feel to her makeup but still looked light enough that she felt like herself.

After the makeup was done I placed Manjari’s tikka (traditional forehead jewelry) in the center of her head just below her hair line, attached her bindi and placed her dupatta (traditional head scarf). Now she was ready to marry her love!

Thank you Manjari, you were so sweet and I loved working with you!
